How to align fastener standards? GB/T, DIN and ISO differences for cross-border procurement

Why the same nominal spec differs across the three standards

When cross-border buyers first compare standards, they often discover that an M8×1.25×30 hex bolt produced to GB/T 5783, DIN 933 and ISO 4017 can vary by 1–5 % in head dimensions, chamfer, thread run-out and mechanical performance, and may even fail to fit a flange that nominally accepts 'standard' bolts. The three standards come from different drafting histories: GB/T is derived from Soviet ГОСТ and then localised, DIN originates from German industry, and ISO was later harmonised as the international reference. Each defines its own width-across-flats, thread run-out length and marking convention. Hong Kong buyers sourcing cross-border should always confirm the standard number written into the technical agreement before production, not afterwards.

Head, thread and performance differences compared

Take the width-across-flats (s) of a hex bolt head: GB/T 5782 / 5783, DIN 931 / 933 and ISO 4014 / 4017 share the same nominal value, but DIN / ISO tolerance bands on s are typically tighter, so a DIN bolt sits a touch smaller than a GB/T one. On threads, both GB/T and ISO metric threads use a 60° thread angle, but GB/T's medium tolerance class (6g / 6H) leaves slightly more flank clearance, which suits parts made on older lathes. Strength grades use a common system: carbon-steel 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9 comes from ISO 898-1, which GB/T 3098.1 fully adopts and DIN mirrors; stainless A2-70 / A4-80 follows ISO 3506 and the GB/T 3098.6 marking rules, while DIN labelling uses a slightly different notation (e.g. A2-70 vs DIN's A2-70 / W1). Knowing the differences prevents disputes at goods-in inspection.

How to write a technical agreement that avoids pitfalls

In practice, cross-border procurement should specify three things in the technical agreement, RFQ or drawing: ① full standard reference including year (e.g. GB/T 5783-2016 — the year sometimes matters when revisions change dimensions); ② key head and thread dimensions (width-across-flats s, spanner clearance e); ③ reference for material certificates and mechanical test reports (e.g. GB/T 3098.1 or ISO 898-1 test methods). European and US customers typically prefer DIN / ISO; mainland China and large domestic projects usually take GB/T; Southeast Asia and Hong Kong commonly use 'GB/T where possible, switch to DIN when the customer asks'.
