When are duplex stainless steel fasteners worth it? Selecting 2205/2507 for chloride service

The gap between 316 and nickel alloys - where duplex fits
In coastal, chloride-laden or chemical environments, the limits of 316 are well known: above roughly 200 ppm chloride and 60 degrees C, pitting risk climbs quickly, and crevices under washers are the worst offenders. Jumping straight to nickel alloys such as alloy 625 multiplies the cost several times over; duplex stainless steel fills the middle ground. 2205 (UNS S31803/S32205) carries 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and 0.14-0.20% nitrogen, giving a pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) of about 33-35 versus roughly 25 for 316. Its yield strength of at least 450 MPa (EN 10088-3 / ASTM A479) is about double that of A4-70, close to an 8.8 grade - the same load can be carried one size smaller. Super duplex 2507 (UNS S32750, 25% Cr, 4% Mo, 0.24-0.32% N) raises PREN above 40, stepping up resistance to chloride pitting and stress corrosion once more. A simple tiering: temperate outdoor and salt splash, 316 may suffice; continuous seawater immersion, hot salt spray or chloride chemical media, start at 2205; hottest and most crevice-prone service, 2507.
Specifying and buying: grade, condition and phase balance on paper
Buying duplex fasteners by just writing '2205' is not enough. First, state the grade against its standard: 2205 per ASTM A479 / EN 10088-3 (1.4462), 2507 as 1.4410, and fasteners should be supplied in the solution-annealed condition - cold-worked material has higher strength, but its corrosion and toughness data cannot be cited directly. Second, constrain metallurgical quality: duplex performance depends on the austenite/ferrite balance (typically 40-60% each) and controlled nitrogen content; improper welding or heat treatment precipitates sigma phase, degrading toughness and corrosion resistance together - ASTM A923 ferric chloride testing screens for harmful intermetallics. Third, handle the mechanical mapping: duplex has no 8.8/10.9 style grade system, so drawings should state minimum yield and tensile directly (typical 2205: Rp0.2 >= 450 MPa, Rm >= 650 MPa), and duplex fasteners pair best with same-material nuts, never mixed into carbon-steel assemblies where galvanic corrosion looms. On price, 2205 runs about 1.5-2x 316, but doubled strength plus maintenance-free life often wins on total cost of ownership.
Acceptance and applications: turning corrosion data into documents
Acceptance in three steps. One, mechanical re-verification: tensile and hardness per batch (solution-annealed, roughly <= 290 HBW), checked against the certificate. Two, corrosion verification: for critical batches, ASTM G48 Method A (ferric chloride) for pitting or ASTM A923 for intermetallic screening; salt-spray validation may reference ISO 9227. Three, documentation: an EN 10204 3.1 certificate per batch stating heat number, solution temperature (typical 2205: 1020-1100 degrees C, water quenched) and chemical composition. Typical applications include coastal curtain-wall connections, seawater cooling systems, and flue-gas desulfurization or wastewater equipment. During installation note duplex's low thermal conductivity and rapid work hardening: tighten slowly and in steps, avoiding high-speed friction heating. In short, the value zone for duplex stainless fasteners is exactly the middle ground where 316 fails and nickel alloys overprice.
