JIALI offers free fastener selection advice — send a drawing or sample

What selection advice actually solves

Many buyers and engineers assume that choosing a fastener means reading a size and buying it. In practice the size settles only the dimensions; what determines service life is the combination of material, property class and finish. The same M8×30 bolt in 8.8 gr zinc plated, 10.9 gr Dacromet and 316 stainless can perform several times differently in an outdoor vibrating environment. The case we see most often is a customer reordering an old part number without noticing that the application has changed — equipment moved from indoors to outdoors, or a washdown process switched to a chlorine-based sanitiser — and the original zinc-plated part starts corroding within six months. Free selection advice exists to ask those questions at the start, avoiding the rework and safety risk of specifying the wrong part.

What information we need

To give accurate advice we normally need five categories of information. (1) Environment: indoor or outdoor, coastal or not, chemical exposure (acids, alkalis, chlorine-based cleaners), and operating temperature range. (2) Load: static or dynamic, whether there is vibration or alternating load, and the estimated tension or shear. (3) Base material and mating parts: what the joint connects (steel, aluminium, stainless, plastic) and whether dissimilar metals will be in contact. (4) Installation: whether there is tool access, whether a torque wrench can be used, and whether frequent disassembly is expected. (5) Quantity and timing: regular stock or made to order, and whether there is a project milestone. With these five, we can usually advise material and grade, a workable finish, and the risks to watch the same day; if the information is incomplete we will ask rather than quote a specification that may not fit.

Free advice plus drawings and samples: from selection to quotation

The advice is free and non-standard parts are welcome as drawings or samples. If you have a drawing, sending it is fastest — we review it first, checking that material, thread tolerance, property class and finish are fully specified, and raising anything unclear. A physical sample alone is also fine; we can measure the key dimensions for you. Once reviewed we issue a quotation and recommendation, and on your confirmation move to prototyping or batch supply. A typical reply covers the recommended material and grade with reasoning, the expected salt-spray hours for the proposed finish, whether a locking feature is needed and which type, the documentation available (material certificates, test reports, salt-spray reports), and the estimated lead time. This process is especially useful for first-time buyers or those changing supplier, because it settles the technical risk before the order is placed.

The three questions we are asked most

Three questions come up most often, so here they are answered directly. First, 'is stainless much more expensive than zinc plated?' The unit price is indeed higher, roughly three to six times, but once service life and replacement labour are counted, stainless often has a lower total cost of ownership in coastal and humid environments — a zinc-plated part may need replacing within one or two years while stainless lasts ten or more. Second, 'can I use a stainless bolt with a carbon steel nut?' Not advisable: dissimilar metal contact causes galvanic corrosion, and the two have different property classes, so matching materials within the same family is preferable. Third, 'I want to change supplier for an existing size — how do I confirm the quality matches?' Request the material certificate and test reports first, then run a small trial batch and compare thread gauges, hardness, coating thickness and appearance before switching volume. None of these has a universal answer; each depends on the actual condition, which is precisely why we offer the advice free. Need selection guidance?
