Why fasteners rust on the shelf - critical humidity, white rust and red rust
A familiar scene in purchasing and warehousing: the salt-spray report passed 96 hours, yet after a few months on the shelf the boxes come out covered in white powder, or worse, red rust. Start with humidity. Steel begins electrochemical corrosion once relative humidity crosses a critical threshold of roughly 60 percent - above it, a continuous water film forms on the metal surface, and with dust, fingerprints and the mild acidity of packaging paper the reaction quietly runs on. Where day-night temperature swings reach 8-10 degC, part surfaces fall below the dew point and condense overnight; the rainy season and coastal warehouses make this worse. Read the damage by colour: white powder on zinc-plated parts is zinc hydroxide corrosion product, known as white rust - usually storage damp, and the part remains usable if the base metal is sound and the deposit wipes off. Red-brown rust reaching the base steel is red rust, the line for rejection or re-galvanising. Corrugated cartons carry 10-14 percent moisture and release it steadily against the metal - an overlooked accomplice. A salt-spray test therefore reflects coating performance, not storage safety; indoor storage is not automatically safe. Fastener anti-rust starts with packaging and humidity control, which is exactly what GB/T 4879, the anti-rust packaging standard, exists for.
Packaging in four tiers: PE bags, VCI anti-rust, desiccant and foil lamination
Match the packaging tier to storage duration and value. Tier one, plain PE or OPP bags: they keep dust off but not moisture - film vapour transmission still runs several grams per square metre per day - so they suit indoor short-turnaround stock under one month. Tier two, VCI anti-rust bags and papers: volatile corrosion inhibitors evaporate inside a sealed space and adsorb as a protective film on the metal, with formulations for carbon steel, zinc plating and mixed-metal loads; validated to GB/T 4879 and ISO 16048 test methods, VCI protection acts within about 30 cm of the metal, the load-to-package ratio must follow supplier data, and a properly sealed bag protects for one to two years - the mainstream choice for export sea freight and long inventory. Bags must be heat-sealed or tightly tied; an open VCI bag does nothing. Tier three, desiccant packs combined with high-barrier foil bags: dose silica gel at roughly 50-100 g per square metre of package area following GB/T 5048 moisture-proof packaging practice - the tier for humidity-sensitive precision fasteners. Tier four, vacuum or foil-laminated bags for high-value stainless and very long-term storage. One extra point for zinc-plated stock: the chromate or trivalent-chromium passivation applied at the works is the first line of defence against white rust, so specify passivation when ordering; stainless tolerates storage better but should stay clear of chlorine-based cleaners and PVC tape residue to avoid pitting.
Seven warehouse disciplines and outbound checks: humidity, stacking and FIFO
Even the right packaging fails without warehouse discipline. Seven steps: first, incoming acceptance - check plating appearance and material certificates, and dry out rain-dampened packaging before it enters stock; second, stacking - keep pallets 15-20 cm off the floor and 30 cm from walls with ventilation lanes between stacks, never directly on concrete; third, humidity control - log relative humidity twice daily, start dehumidification above 65 percent, and hold the stock area at 50-60 percent where facilities allow; fourth, FIFO - card every batch and re-inspect zinc-plated stock older than 6-12 months; fifth, monthly patrol - open one bag at random and look for early white rust; sixth, disposition - light white rust may be wiped and re-passivated, while red rust is rejected or returned for pickling and re-galvanising; seventh, certificates - keep EN 10204 3.1 material certificates matched to batch numbers so customer requests are answered instantly. Before issue, confirm packaging is intact and VCI bags unbroken. Turning fastener anti-rust from a claim discovered at delivery into a control exercised at receipt cuts inventory losses by an order of magnitude.
