Self-tapping vs self-drilling: both cut threads, but the process differs

Self-tapping screws (GB/T 845, DIN 7981 / 7982) need a pre-drilled pilot hole, then cut their own mating thread into the part — ideal for thin sheet, plastics and timber. Self-drilling screws (DIN 7504, often called TEK or drill-point screws) carry an integral drill tip and combine drilling, threading and fastening in one operation, cutting installation time on profiled steel roofing and light-gauge framing by 2–3x. Mixing them up is costly: a self-tapping screw driven into thick steel without a pilot hole snaps its tip, while a self-drilling screw on very thin sheet can blow through the part and never clamp. Confirm substrate thickness and whether pilot holes are allowed before ordering — that is step one.

Matching head styles and coatings to the application

Choose the head by the mounting surface: countersunk heads sit flush but need a pre-cut countersink; pan heads offer a larger bearing face and tolerate more torque error; hex-washer-head self-drillers to DIN 7504 K come with an EPDM sealing washer, and waterproofing relies on washer compression rather than sealant. Coating follows the environment: blue-white zinc plating is fine indoors; outdoor and humid service needs Dacromet or heavy zinc; coastal, high-salt sites should move to coated 410 stainless or 316. On hardness, a drill point needs quenching to about HRC 53 or above to cut metal, and a standard No. 2 point penetrates roughly 0.7–6 mm steel; case-hardened self-tapping screws suit direct driving in sheet under about 2 mm — pushing past that range simply snaps the tip.

Three installation and acceptance essentials

(1) Control the speed: run the driver at 1,500–2,500 rpm adjusted to sheet thickness — high speed with heavy pressure overheats the drill point, anneals it and snaps the tip. (2) Ease off at breakthrough: keeping pressure on the moment the point breaks through the bottom layer is the main cause of stripped threads and over-compressed washers; release and let the thread pull itself in. (3) Check seal and tightness at acceptance: EPDM washer compression of about one third to one half of original thickness with no off-centre squeeze-out, sample torque checks, and a water-penetration test for roofing work.
