How to pick the right rod length
A threaded rod (DIN 976 all-thread stud) is a round bar fully threaded from end to end, normally supplied in 1 metre lengths (M1000) — with 2 m and 3 m variants common in European and Southeast Asian mills. On site it is cut as required and joined with nuts and flat washers for any longer run. The rule for length is 'over-spec the cut, not the run': first calculate the single-rod load length and the number of joins, then add 30–50 mm cutting allowance. Sub-1 m custom lengths are possible but MOQ is typically 200–500 kg. DIN 976-1 is the international standard for all-thread; Hong Kong site work and machinery assembly can specify DIN 976 directly, with GB/T 15389 as the Chinese equivalent.
Matching material to strength class
Threaded rod material grades, from low to high strength: 4.8 mild carbon steel (Q235), 8.8 medium-carbon steel (heat-treated 35#), 10.9 alloy steel (42CrMo / SCM435), 12.9 alloy steel, and A2 / A4 stainless. Indoor suspension and light supports take 4.8 hot-dip galvanised; equipment anchoring and high-preload joints take 8.8 or 10.9; bridge anchoring and wind-power foundations typically use 10.9 hot-dip galvanised or Dacromet coated. For coastal or outdoor corrosive sites, specify A4-80 stainless (ISO 3506) to avoid future rust failures. Batch orders should always come with material certificates and mechanical reports per GB/T 3098.1 or ISO 898-1.
On-site cutting and anti-loosening tips
Threaded rod is usually cut on site with a pipe cutter or angle grinder, and the cut end must be re-threaded with a thread die or capped with a double-nut lock to prevent thread damage and ensure a clean nut start. A common error in embedded-anchor and rebar situations is compensating a short rod with extra thread engagement — the correct approach is to calculate anchor depth first (concrete typically ≥ 15d) and pre-cut to whole-metre lengths. For vibration-loaded joints always use nylon-insert lock nuts (DIN 985 / GB/T 889) or double-nut locking, tightened in steps to the rated torque.
