Expansion Bolts vs Chemical Anchors: Selection and Installation Guide

Load principle and force differences
Expansion bolts grip the substrate by mechanically expanding against the hole wall, generating friction. Chemical anchors bond the bolt to the concrete via resin adhesive that fills the annular gap and cures into an integral mass. Expansion bolts install quickly and are removable, but exert expansion stress on the substrate; chemical anchors generate no expansion stress, distribute load more evenly, and suit cracked concrete or small edge-distance conditions.
Substrate and application selection
Expansion bolts work well in solid concrete or brick of reasonable strength, typically M6–M20 with loads from hundreds to thousands of newtons. Chemical anchors also suit hollow block and lightweight concrete, with superior seismic and fatigue performance. In humid or extreme-temperature environments choose weather-resistant resin (e.g. vinyl ester); the hole must be thoroughly clean, or bond strength drops sharply.
Installation tips and common issues
For expansion bolts, match hole diameter and embedment depth (e.g. M10 commonly uses a 12 mm hole, embedment >= 55 mm) and verify full expansion after tightening.
