Hex Socket vs Hex Head Bolts: Drive, Tools and Applications

2026-08-24

Compiled by JIALI Industrial (164.hk) — a Hong Kong fastener supplier specialising in screws, bolts, nuts and selection know-how.

Head Design and Space Requirements

Hex head bolts protrude and need side access for wrenches, ideal for open spaces. Hex socket bolts have a cylindrical head with an internal hex recess, allowing flush or countersunk installation where space is tight or a smooth surface is needed. Equipment interiors, rail vehicles and precision machinery often prefer socket heads.

Tools and Torque Transfer

Hex heads use open-end wrenches or sockets, readily available. Socket heads need Allen keys or torque-bit sockets, with six internal walls providing more stable torque transfer and less cam-out. Under high torque, grade 12.9 socket head cap screws (DIN912) with proper tooling achieve more accurate preload.

Load Characteristics and Selection Tips

Hex heads have a larger bearing surface, good for general structural joints. Socket head walls are thinner, and excessive torque can round the recess. Check space constraints and appearance first, then match torque and strength grade. Not sure which to choose? Contact JIALI Industrial (164.hk) with your application for fast advice.
